HGTV HOME Makeover is all about the fun discovery of something that’s going to turn the design world upside down. Meg Caswell, host of HGTV’s Meg’s Great Rooms, is tasked with making over a family’s living room using only products from the HGTV HOME collection. This is a light-hearted, energetic family who wants their space to have that “Wow” appeal, and Meg is going to give it to them! But first she needs to learn about the products within the HGTV HOME collection, so she visits showrooms and retail stores to see where these products can be found, learns about how they all coordinate together, and gets a close-up look at how they’re made in factories. Then she puts it all together and creates an amazing living room. All unscripted and real, we’ll follow Meg through her journey as she goes through HGTV HOME 101, and then teams up with Marc Bartolomeo, her side-kick carpenter, to make it all work for the family.

How To Steps:

1. Remove all hardware from cabinets. Organize cabinets doors in order of removal.

2. Sand down wooden surface on both sides until the finish or stain has been completely removed.

3. Clean doors with a wet towel removing sawdust and let dry completely.

4. Prime cabinets to prevent chipping and to ensure a long lasting look.

5. When primer is completely dry, apply top coat with a roller or brush, depending on your cabinets design. Add second coat if needed. Repeat steps for cabinet base.

6. When cabinet doors and base are completely dry, reassemble. Now, step back and enjoy your freshly updated kitchen.

How to Steps:

1. I chose a beautiful deep blue, Lupine, from HGTV HOME by Sherwin-Williams’s Color Pizazz palette.

2. Prep your door. If you have a wooden door, you will need to sand with a coarse grit sandpaper removing any finish or stain. Using a wet cloth, wipe down the door removing any debris or dirt. Once completely dry, remove your door knob and hardware with appropriate tools. Cover any metal plates with painter’s tape.

3. Lay down a tarp or drop cloth, covering completely under door area.

4. If needed, apply a primer allowing the paint to adhere to the door’s surface.

5. After primer is completely dry, paint door’s edges, from top to bottom with a trim brush.

6. Paint the remaining door’s surface. I used a small rolling brush. Apply second coat if needed.

7. Allow paint to dry for several hours before replacing hardware and closing door.

Now for the actual project, I thought I could run into some difficulties. However, this is a pre-pasted paper and only needs water to apply. It’s also washable, breathable, and removes in seconds. Check out the Know How Steps below.

1. Measure the space you are covering ensuring you order the appropriate amount of paper rolls. Keep in mind you should order excess for application purposes.

2. Select and order your HGTV HOME by Sherwin-Williams wallpaper either online, here http://www.swdecorating.com/default.asp?fm=/hgtv_home.asp or at your local Sherwin-Williams store.  Expect 5-7 days for your delivery date.

3. Prep your area, setting out needed supplies. (wallpaper, sponge or roller, exacto knife, measuring tape, large water filled container or tub)  Make certain walls are clean for wallpaper to adhere to space.

4. Measure wall space adding 4 inches longer than wall’s height. Cut into strips.

5. Loosely re-roll each strip from bottom to top with pattern side in. Immerse in a large water-filled container or bathtub, no longer than 15-20 seconds. Water should be at room temperature.

6. Unroll paper strip, aligning top of strip with edge of ceiling. Unroll the rest of the strip and align. From top to bottom, use a sponge or roller to smooth out any air bubbles that may appear. Trim excess paper safely using an exacto knife or sharp box cutter. Using a dull blade will tear paper.

7. With each new strip, ensure edge of pattern matches with the previous strip. Repeat steps 5 & 6. Remove any excess paste wiping paper down with clean water and sponge.

SUPPLIES: Wooden photo frame, Mod Podge, brush, X-acto knife, wallpaper (HGTV HOME by Sherwin-Williams Wallpaper Collection #441-5609) or decorative paper.

Step 1: Choose a wallpaper or paper sample. Cut a 9.5×9.5″ square (you’ll trim it down to 9×9″ later)

Step 2: Apply Mod Podge to front of the frame and to the back of the wallpaper.

Step 3: Stick the two glued sides together. Let dry for 20 minutes.

Step 4: Trim the excess wallpaper from the edges.

Step 5: Trim out the center portion of the frame.

Step 6: Apply a layer of Mod Podge to seal the edges and the paper. Let dry for half hour.

Place your favorite photo in the frame and you’re done!
