Meg Caswell, host of HGTV’s Meg’s Great Rooms, is tasked with making over a family’s living room using only products from the HGTV HOME collection. This is a light-hearted, energetic family who wants their space to have that “Wow” appeal, and Meg is going to give it to them! But first she needs to learn about the products within the HGTV HOME collection, so she visits showrooms and retail stores to see where these products can be found, learns about how they all coordinate together, and gets a close-up look at how they’re made in factories. Then she puts it all together and creates an amazing living room. All unscripted and real, we’ll follow Meg through her journey as she goes through HGTV HOME 101, and then teams up with Marc Bartolomeo, her side-kick carpenter, to make it all work for the family.

KITCHEN CABINET MAKEOVER

Uncategorized

cabinets

kitchen

makeover

paint

Hoping to spruce up your kitchen without emptying your wallet? Just follow the steps below and be sure to document your own kitchen transformation.

How To Steps:

1. Remove all hardware from cabinets. Organize cabinets doors in order of removal.

2. Sand down wooden surface on both sides until the finish or stain has been completely removed.

3. Clean doors with a wet towel removing sawdust and let dry completely.

4. Prime cabinets to prevent chipping and to ensure a long lasting look.

5. When primer is completely dry, apply top coat with a roller or brush, depending on your cabinets design. Add second coat if needed. Repeat steps for cabinet base.

6. If you are like me, you enter your back door more often than the front. Why not choose an inspiring color that not only welcomes your guests, but a color that greets you daily? Follow the steps below for an easy weekend project.

How to Steps:

1. I chose a beautiful deep blue, Lupine, from HGTV HOME by Sherwin-Williams’s Color Pizazz palette.

2. Prep your door. If you have a wooden door, you will need to sand with a coarse grit sandpaper removing any finish or stain. Using a wet cloth, wipe down the door removing any debris or dirt. Once completely dry, remove your door knob and hardware with appropriate tools. Cover any metal plates with painter’s tape.

3. Lay down a tarp or drop cloth, covering completely under door area.

4. If needed, apply a primer allowing the paint to adhere to the door’s surface.

5. After primer is completely dry, paint door’s edges, from top to bottom with a trim brush.

6. Paint the remaining door’s surface. I used a small rolling brush. Apply second coat if needed.

7. Allow paint to dry for several hours before replacing hardware and closing door.

Don’t forget your door appeal. I assembled a quick and easy rosemary wreath for an easy DIY accent. For the wreath how to instructions visit, http://www.centsationalgirl.com/2010/12/simple-last-second/

WALLPAPER ACCENT WALL IN SHARED SPACE

Uncategorized

makeover

shared spaces

wallpaper

I share an office with my husband which can be challenging when it comes to decorating. His side of the room reads more professional and business-like while mine is more on the playful side. What a perfect way to divide the room than with an accent wall. Instead of going for the obvious and painting, I wanted to try the wallpaper route. I found just what I was looking for from the HGTV HOME by Sherwin-Williams Wallpaper Collections. I checked out the sample book and fell in love with several options. Before choosing, I made certain to view my favorite samples in our office to capture the room’s exact lighting. After narrowing it down, I selected number 441-5510 from the Traditional Twist Collection, a beautiful silver and cream pattern. While not typically a floral gal, I love this pattern and its neutral tones.

Now for the actual project, I thought I could run into some difficulties. However, this is a pre-pasted paper and only needs water to apply. It’s also washable, breathable, and removes in seconds. Check out the Know How Steps below.

1. Measure the space you are covering ensuring you order the appropriate amount of paper rolls. Keep in mind you should order excess for application purposes.

2. Select and order your HGTV HOME by Sherwin-Williams wallpaper either online, here http://www.swdecorating.com/default.asp?fm=/hgtv_home.asp or at your local Sherwin-Williams store. Expect 5-7 days for your delivery date.

3. Prep your area, setting out needed supplies. (wallpaper, sponge or roller, exacto knife, measuring tape, large water filled container or tub) Make certain walls are clean for wallpaper to adhere to space.

4. Measure wall space adding 4 inches longer than wall’s height. Cut into strips.

5. Loosely re-roll each strip from bottom to top with pattern side in. Immerse in a large water-filled container or bathtub, no longer than 15-20 seconds. Water should be at room temperature.

6. Unroll paper strip, aligning top of strip with edge of ceiling. Unroll the rest of the strip and align. From top to bottom, use a sponge or roller to smooth out any air bubbles that may appear. Trim excess paper safely using an exacto knife or sharp box cutter. Using a dull blade will tear paper.

7. With each new strip, ensure edge of pattern matches with the previous strip. Repeat steps 5 & 6. Remove any excess paste wiping paper down with clean water and sponge.

Living “Mid-Century” with HGTV HOME and Bassett

Uncategorized

bassett

mad men

mid-century

Very few things lift my spirits like retail therapy. Yes, I do love watching Sundays at Augusta and weekend football marathons in the fall. But nothing beats a trip to the outlets or shopping for a new big-screen TV!

You can imagine my excitement then when HGTV and Bassett Furniture announced an exciting new partnership, the HGTV HOME Furniture by Bassett line. As recent first-time homebuyers, my wife Brandii and I were presented with the challenge of furnishing an empty house. The “college look” we kept in our apartment – it’s been a “few” years since we graduated – wasn’t going to cut it in this new 3-bedroom, 2.5-bath, 2-story we call home.

First impressions are everything, so the living room was our focus as we walked into our nearby Bassett location. We’re both rabid Mad Men fans, so we wanted a mid-century modern feel. One though with a blend of colors you don’t come across every day: purple, citron and teal.

As you can see, the new HGTV HOME Design Studio at Bassett delivered. New at more than 80 Bassett locations across the country, this new HGTV HOME experience leverages Bassett’s 100+ year history of building quality home furnishings with the credibility and popularity of the HGTV brand. The Knoxville location was inundated with stylish and, just as important, well-priced furniture options and fabric options – more than 1,000 of them – perfectly suited for our mid-century modern needs. And our talented design consultant, Stephanie, helped create the perfect HGTV HOME custom look for our space – a chic, mid-century modern-inspired living space that will allow us to live like Don and Megan.

Bassett guarantees delivery of our custom furniture in less than 30 days. For Brandii and me, December can’t get here soon enough!

PROJECT: A PAINTED PATIO RUG IS EASY AND INEXPENSIVE

Uncategorized

ideas

paint

patio

patio rug

project

rug

weekend

Looking for a weekend project to spice up your wooden deck or patio? The painted rug adds color and unexpected personality that will last for years. In fact, you don’t have to worry about leaving it outside during even the most brutal winter. Best of all, it’s simple and quite doable in a weekend. Ready to get started?

1. Clean the deck. Pressure washing is best, but you get away with a good soap and water scrub.

2. Size it. Decide how big you want the rug to be. Pick the number of planks across you’d like to do. Then tape of the area with blue painter’s tape.

3. Apply your first color. I chose HGTV HOME by Sherwin Williams’ Eggwhite from the Color Pizzazz color palette.

4. After the first color dries, tape over those edges and apply the second color. Here, I’ve used Frolic, also from the Color Pizzazz color palette.

5. Tape off the second color and apply the third. Peppercorn from the Color Pizzazz color palette was the perfect complement for my first two choices.

6. Let it dry. Remove all the tape and touch up any edges. Allow it a day to get good and dry, then create your sitting area right there on your brand new painted patio rug!

SWATCHBOOK: CLASSIC CHRISTMAS

Uncategorized

christmas

colors

decor

holiday

paint

sherwin-williams

winter

Whether you’re looking for wrapping-paper red or garland green, HGTV HOME by Sherwin-Williams will make your holiday season merry and bright with this classic Christmas color palette.
